A obituary (noun and adjective, from Latin obitus (death) is a register containing the names of the dead and the date of their burial, so that religious services can be held for the repose of their souls. The churches and monasteries have an obituary, i.e. a register in which the names of benefactors, abbots, monks (nuns) and other people associated with the life of the abbey are recorded on the day of their death. And also the obits owed to the founders of this particular institution: the obituary register.
By extension, the cabinet containing the register could also be called an obituary.
