Towards the end of the\u00a0War of the Spanish Succession<\/a>the\u00a0France<\/a>\u00a0signed the\u00a0Treaty of Barriers<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0United Provinces<\/a>\u00a0This treaty granted the United Provinces the right to establish\u00a0strongholds<\/a>\u00a0in various towns in the\u00a0Austrian Netherlands<\/a>\u00a0(Charleroi<\/a>,\u00a0Furnes<\/a>,\u00a0Ghent<\/a>,\u00a0Menin<\/a>,\u00a0Mons<\/a>,\u00a0Namur<\/a>,\u00a0Tournai<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Ypres<\/a>).
\nWalloon churches were established in these towns following the arrival of Dutch soldiers. These churches welcomed many French Protestants who came to have their children baptised or their marriages blessed, which they could no longer do in France following the\u00a0Revocation of the Edict of Nantes<\/a>.
\nThe Treaty of the Barriers was denounced by the emperor\u00a0Joseph II<\/a>\u00a0in 1781 and the\u00a0Treaty of Fontainebleau<\/a>\u00a0abolished the Dutch garrisons in 1785.
